Redland Elementary Music Department comprises of two music teachers, Mr. Jackman and Ms. Torrelles, who teach general music to grades 2, 3, 4, and 5. The General Music Curriculum is based on the Sunshine State Standards – Skills & Technique, Creation & Communication, Cultural & Historical Connections, Aesthetic & Critical Analysis and Applications to Life. FCAT strategies are implimented to enhance reading, writing, math and science.
In addition to teaching general music in the classroom, Mr. Jackman directs the Redland Steeldrum Ensemble and Ms. Torrelles directs the Redland Cardinals Chorus. Both groups rehearse before and after the scheduled school hours and perform on and off the school campus during the school year.
REDLAND CARDINALS CHORUS
Redland Cardinals Chorus is open to the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who are ready to commit their time and effort to improve their musical talents. A variety of Classical, Patriotic, Broaday, Disney and Seasonal songs are performed under the direction of Ms. Torrelles.
REDLAND STEELDRUM ENSEMBLE
Redland Steeldrum Ensemble is comprised of 4th and 5th grade students. All students are invited. The students are required to participate in an audition that comprises of elementary theory and the performance of four to eight measures of music on pitched and unpitched instruments. In addition, members are required to complete a research and writing project entitled “Steeldrum (Pan) – a 20th Century Musical Invention.” The project is due February 30th 2009 for the school year ending June 2010.
The Ensemble rehearses Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 8:15am and performs on and off the school campus all throughout the year. The repetoire is diversified and includes, classical, caribbean, latin, pop, R & B, hip-hop, jazz, rock, traditional and patriotic songs…to name a few styles.
